“The thing that just amazed me and showed me how powerful plants are is that one tomato plant which was still in a pot entrenched itself in the ground because the pot was standing on the soil.”

“An additional bonus of gardening is that we get to know our neighbors across the fence a bit more as our neighbour was gardening at the same time as we. One time she gave us eggs from her chickens, and another it was more tomato plants because we did not have enough plants ;)”

“It was lovely sitting in the garden drinking a coffee and seeing the plants grow”

Plants are magical. That is what we realised when gardening behind our house. At the end of march we started planting some eggplant, tomato, melons, avocado, mango, thyme and paprika seeds, some seeds bought from the store and some taken out of the vegetable itself. Later on we also got tomato and mint and beetroot plants from a friend. All set with our seeds, we waited for them to grow. Some made it and some did not.

At the point that they became so big that we really needed to put them somewhere with more space we got really lucky, because the landlord showed us the back of the house where there was a lot of space to repot the tomatoes, paprika, eggplant, mint and beetroot in.

We started with loosening the soil and then planned how we would like to organise the plants. We decided on a circle-shaped setup. In the inside row we planted the paprika, in the middle row we placed the tomatoes, and in the outer circle the eggplants and the beetroot, as well as the mint and the thyme which we ingrafted in car wheels next to it. We had been a little too enthusiastic with planting seeds, so to give the leftover plants a home we went to alai hub to plant some tomatoes there. After a few weeks you could already see some development, and because we went on trips from time to time it was always super exciting to see the development when we would come back. We also build an in-ground compost in our garden which is a very efficient way to make sure the plants have direct access to the nutrients.

Around the end of May the first small green tomatoes became visible, which meant that it was also time to remove most of the weeds that had grown over time. A task which we unfortunately realised later, is easier to do when the soil is wet. Now, the garden was completely ready to bloom, and for us all that is left to do is to water, and to wait. 🙂
